The YWTI is aimed at training youth workers, who work with youth between the ages of 13 and 24, to engage in conversations with youth about illicit drugs.

Youth outreach workers play a unique role in the service system because they often connect with young people that service providers rarely, if ever, see. Giving youth workers knowledge and skills to identify, intervene and successfully refer youth who are at-risk of or who are beginning to experiment with illicit drugs is therefore a strategic and effective prevention strategy.

About this Project
The Youth Worker Training Initiative is funded by the Drug Strategy Community Initiatives Fund (DSCIF), Health Canada.

Working in partnership with YouthLink Inner City, Aboriginal Legal Services (Toronto), the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health and the Toronto Drug Strategy Secretariat, this project will produce and deliver an evidence-based illicit drug abuse prevention training program for youth workers in Toronto. The 21-month project will increase youth workers' knowledge of the pharmacology of illicit drugs and decrease the negative impacts of illicit drug use in high-risk communities through early identification and intervention by youth workers.
