Matthew Plummer a twenty two year old that is living in Jane and Finch is a graduate from Sen-eca @York in the Broadcasting & Television program, and the film mentorship program that runs out of Jane and Finch called “Shoot With This” a program that runs for eight months working with the youth of Jane and Finch teaching them the various steps of film making. Matthew a few years ago was a youth that was at risk himself, but now is a young man that is trying to bring about change in the neighborhoods that are at risk. Matthew’s goal in life is to help youth that are at risk to believe in themselves and want to make changes in their lives. In 2008, Matthew creat-ed a youth led program called Film Stars where he and three other students from Shoot With This taught young people in Jane and finch the steps on how to create a film. The program had a major impact in Jane and Finch and caught the eyes of many people. Matthew than decided to do something that people said he could never do, have the program run in different neighborhoods. In 2009, the second year of Film Stars was to different neighborhoods, again working with at risk youth. The mission of this youth led program is to give youth in the priority neighborhoods an opportunity that they otherwise would not have and also give them the tools that will help them tell their stories and shared in Toronto.

The Film Stars Project works with youth that are aged around 12-24 and all youth that we work with are labelled “at risk”. This project is youth led because all members are youth and all partic-ipants are youth and the participants have control of the program. They will create their own script, decide who’s doing what and edit their own films. The staff are just there to help the youth out if they need any help. The youth will oversee how the program will take shape during the six months. The Film Stars develop leadership skills through the basic act of giving young people a chance to be heard, to tell their stories and that is very empowering. We also strongly encourage our students to “pass it on”, meaning that whatever they have learned from this project they will share with others in their community. And the opportunities that the youth will get out from this is they will get the chance to become a mentee to the Film Stars Project, plus they will make many contacts and access opportunities for networking.

Overview
What We Do
The Film Stars Project was created to bring hope back into the communities that have had major image problems frequently brought about by the media. The job of the staff in this project is to go into these communities and inject some new and vitalizing elements into them. The youths will be working with industry-level equipment and will learn all the technical steps of how the various components operate. We will help the youth become leaders, leaders who want to see change in their neighborhoods. A lot of these youths have major trust issues that are eliminated with us because we understand what they are going through. What is unique about us is that the staff of this project are young people themselves who are living in priority neighborhoods. So the staff can relate to the youths in a meaningful way and they will be open with us because they know that we understand the same struggles that they are going through.
Our job is simple, to make sure that the youth we work with believe in themselves and want to go out in the real world and make something out of their lives. We are like no other program. Instead of the youth coming to us we go to them and show them that we appreciate them and make them know that they are important.

The pictures you see above are pictures taken from the program. The first picture is a shoot in Jane and Finch. The second pic was taken in downtown Toronto for a photoshoot that Film Stars was doing for a girls program. The third pic is in the classroom where we had the students watch themselves on the monitor after their performance.
