Traumatology 1001
This course covers the knowledge and skills needed to respond to the emotional trauma associated with natural or
human-caused disasters or crisis. Topics include: warning signs, recovery stages, fitting intervention to client
needs, steps to lessen crisis impact, utilization of community resources for prevention/resolution. Compassion
Fatigue risk factors, symptoms, and prevention/self care strategies will be addressed. This course is both didactic
and experiential. Emergency Preparedness Canada’s (EPC) - Emergency Site Management Systems will be reviewed. Following
the course all participants will be required to acquire and complete EPC’s Basic Emergency Preparedness course on CD-Rom.
An equivalency process is available for those who believe they have fulfilled some or all of the requirements (e.g. advanced
CISD/M and Advanced Proactive Trauma Management may meet criteria for Traumatology-1001). Keep in mind, however, the Institute’s
courses may offer new material, regardless of whether one has satisfied the requirement elsewhere.

Traumatology 1002
This program covers clinical interventions, assessment approaches, research, theory and practical applications
that help the traumatologist to assist clients. Participants will learn to conduct informal assessments that might
contribute to a professional diagnosis. Participants learn to distinguish between normal and distressed behaviour,
handle cases with skill, and have minimal negative impact upon the client and their family system.

Traumatology 1003
One of the Traumatology Institute’s most important goals is to empower the community, family, company
and individual. This program examines age, gender, race, culture, social class, community standards of
care and other factors that are important in designing and implementing a treatment program that both
responds to client needs and concludes treatment based on client requirements.

Traumatology 1004
This course requires the participant to meet the comprehensive training requirements in one of the approved
treatment approaches. These include but are not limited to: Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT); Traumatic
Incident Reduction (TIR); Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) and Time-Limited Trauma
Therapy (T-LTT). Each of these and future protocols must meet the following criteria: no harm, replicability,
client satisfaction, superior to placebo and field tested. Individuals seeking Certification must provide
proof of program completion including dates, location and instructor.

Traumatology 1005
In this clinical practicum, participants practice and demonstrate proficiency in clinical traumatology skills under the
supervision of a Certified Traumatologist.
This course is offered over 8 separate evenings involving 2 ˝ hour sessions.
