Youth Worker Training Initiative

CTI is hosting a free full-day training session of the Youth Worker Training Initiative (YWTI) available from August 2010 through to January 2011.

The YWTI is an evaluated two year pilot project ending March 2011 aimed at training youth workers, who work with youth between the ages of 13 and 24, to engage in conversations with youth about illicit drugs.

Participants will:

  • Examine the role of illicit drugs in youth culture
  • Learn about the effects, signs, symptoms and consequences of use
  • Discover how to enhance resiliency and protective factors
  • Learn about the Stages of Change and the change process
  • Learn about the Drug Use Continuum and dependence
  • Learn how to make referrals to services in the community
  • Discuss possible resources for youth workers within their community

Participants will have an opportunity to practice the skills and apply the knowledge gained and will come away feeling more confident engaging in discussions with youth about substance use.

About this project...

The Youth Worker Training Initiative is funded by the Drug Strategy Community Initiatives Fund (DSCIF), Health Canada.

Working in partnership with YouthLink Inner City, Aboriginal Legal Services (Toronto), the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health and the Toronto Drug Strategy Secretariat, this project will produce and deliver an evidence-based illicit drug abuse prevention training program for youth workers in Toronto. The 21-month project will increase youth workers' knowledge of the pharmacology of illicit drugs and decrease the negative impacts of illicit drug use in high-risk communities through early identification and intervention by youth workers.
